The GenTeal products are over-the-counter artificial tears used to treat dry eye.

GenTeal is available in different formulations:

GenTeal (0.3%) eye drops in 15mL bottles
GenTeal (0.3%) eye drops in 25mL bottles
GenTeal Severe (0.3%) gel in 3.5 or 10 mL tubes

They all include the same active ingredient (called hydroxypropyl methylcellulose or hypromellose). The three products contain a disappearing preservative called GenAqua™ (sodium perborate), which turns into pure water and oxygen upon contact with the eye.

The appropriate choice of GenTeal product depends on the severity of your patient's symptoms. GenTeal Gel is suitable for patients who suffer with extreme symptoms of dry eye.

Using GenTeal
Eye drops and gel: The patient should administer 1 to 2 drops, as needed, in the affected eye.

Patients who wear contact lenses should be advised to remove them before administering GenTeal in their eyes. After 15 minutes, the lenses can be reinserted.
